Any Control Must Be by the Republic of Armenia: Iranian Ambassador

Iran is opposed to the idea of allowing representatives from other countries to oversee the road connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan through Syunik. This was stated today by the Iranian Ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, during a conversation with journalists when asked how Iran views the potential transfer of control over this road to a private security company.

“We are in favor of everything that happens being under Armenia's sovereignty. Any control must be exercised by the Republic of Armenia, and we are against representatives from other countries coming here to try to establish some sort of security and oversight,” he said.

The Ambassador mentioned that he has heard about the private company but added that, according to his information, this is not about ensuring security. “It is about the fact that a representative of any commercial company can be present on the road while transferring their cargo,” he explained.

According to his information, the security and oversight of the road will be handled by the Armenian government. It is worth noting that the Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia, Mnatsakan Safaryan, confirmed that discussions are underway regarding the possibility of involving a private company in the road's oversight, but he added that details are still not known.
