Runner Set on Fire by Friend Has Died

Rebecca Cheptegei, who represented Uganda at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and finished in 44th place, has died. Hospital authorities confirmed that she passed away three days after being in the intensive care unit. Her vital organs had not recovered.

The 33-year-old Cheptegei suffered severe burns, with 75% of her body affected. On September 1, during an argument, a friend poured gasoline on her and set her ablaze. Cheptegei died in the hospital's intensive care unit.
