VIDEO: Putin Arrives in Mongolia, Where He Is Supposed to Be Arrested According to ICC
Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Mongolia on an official visit. Mongolia is a country that has ratified the Rome Statute, which means it is required to arrest Putin based on the International Criminal Court's (ICC) warrant.
Previously, Human Rights Watch had urged Mongolian authorities to deny entry to Russian President Vladimir Putin or to arrest him. The Russian president is wanted by the ICC, which Mongolia has been a member of since 2003. The Hague court accuses the Kremlin leader of the illegal deportation and transfer of children from Ukrainian territories to Russia.
“Mongolia will violate its international obligations as an ICC member if it allows [Putin] to visit and does not arrest him,” stated the human rights organization's announcement.
This is Putin's first trip to a country that has ratified the Rome Statute since the arrest warrant was issued last March. According to Bloomberg, Ulaanbaatar has assured the Russian president that no obstacles will be created.
