Bill to Ban Migrants from Bringing Families to Russia Introduced in State Duma
The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, Leonid Slutsky, has announced that a group of lawmakers intends to submit a bill to the State Duma prohibiting foreign labor migrants without Russian citizenship from bringing their families to Russia. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the document, the bill concerns low-skilled workers who stay in Russia solely based on employment contracts or permits and do not have other legal grounds for residing in the country. Exceptions will be made for family members of highly qualified foreign workers.
Slutsky explained that the reason for drafting such a bill is the issues faced by Russians due to the large number of foreigners. “Working migrant families should wait for their loved ones at home. When the relatives of working foreigners come to Russia, they live in compact enclaves, speak their language, and have a dismissive attitude towards local residents. There are often cases where such migrants do not pay for housing and utility services and accumulate significant debts that other property owners have to deal with,” he said.
