Sampling Conducted Due to Unsanitary Conditions in Hrazdan Gorge: What We Know
UPDATED. Yesterday, a massive sewage pipe burst in the Hrazdan Gorge area of Yerevan. Raw sewage was flowing onto the adjacent street, with videos circulating online.
Auroranews contacted the company 'Veolia Water' to understand the current situation. They stated that the pipe's water and wastewater were completely drained yesterday so that specialists could begin repairs on the damaged section today. Due to the difficult access to the site, work will be conducted manually.
Officials were unable to clarify the possible causes of the accident. In response to the unsanitary conditions created in the area, the Ministry of Health informed Auroranews that the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention has conducted sampling. Results are expected to be available soon, with preliminary findings anticipated to take about three days.
We are particularly concerned about the sanitary situation, as it is no secret what such a volume of sewage leakage could lead to. It is summer, hot weather, and many are heading toward water bodies. The Yerevan municipality, the Health Inspection Body, and the Ministry of Environment are all expected to take action, particularly regarding imposing temporary swimming and fishing bans in the adjacent river.
As of now, we have not received a clear response from the authorities. The delicate art of shifting responsibility between agencies continues, resulting in citizens being affected.
A request to all our fellow citizens: until these agencies make a decision, please consider your health and avoid visiting the Hrazdan Gorge for the next few days.
