I Am Disappointed: Joe Biden to Zurabishvili

US President Joe Biden has sent a letter to Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili. Zurabishvili shared the letter from Biden on social media, which was sent on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the August 2008 war, expressing the United States' "unwavering" support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

“On this day, we remember those who were killed, wounded, and internally displaced as a result of Russia's brutal invasion, and we witness the Kremlin's ongoing attempts to assert its dominance over the occupied regions at the expense of the local population. The United States remains a strong advocate for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity recognized by the international community,” Biden stated in the letter.

The US President emphasized the determination of the Georgian people to continue expressing their Euro-Atlantic aspirations. “The United States welcomes the Georgian people's unwavering commitment to a democratic future... I am disappointed by the anti-democratic actions of the Georgian government, examples of which include the Kremlin-sponsored 'foreign agents' law and false statements by Georgian officials that do not comply with the criteria for EU and NATO membership. Despite these actions, we remain committed to the people of Georgia and their Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

Over the 32 years of bilateral relations, Georgia and the United States have worked together to defend peace, stability, freedom, and human rights. These shared values unite our countries, and I know that these values will unite our peoples in the future,” Biden concluded.
