Patel Discusses Armenian Prisoners of War Held in Azerbaijani Prisons
During a press briefing, U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel addressed the issue of Armenian prisoners of war and former officials from Nagorno-Karabakh held in Azerbaijani prisons.
"This is something that the Secretary and the Department remain deeply engaged in the broader context of the South Caucasus. I do not have any updates for you as it pertains to the process. When it comes to detained individuals, we have been clear and consistent that any country should treat all detainees humanely, with dignity, and in accordance with international law, and that applies to this case too," the official stated.
A journalist asked about recently published information regarding Iran allegedly selling arms to Armenia, which the parties have denied, but Patel noted that he had no comment on that. He also declined to answer questions regarding Armenian-Turkish negotiations. Patel welcomed the departure of Russian border guards from Zvartnots Airport.
