The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the chief political leader of the Palestinian radical group HAMAS, is described as "a completely unacceptable political assassination" by Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, according to RIA Novosti.
"This is a completely unacceptable political assassination, and it will lead to further escalation of tensions," Bogdanov stated.
It is noteworthy that Haniyeh, the head of the Political Bureau of the HAMAS movement, was killed in Tehran. According to Mehr news agency, citing a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Haniyeh was assassinated during an attack on his residence in the Iranian capital.
"The leader of the Palestinian HAMAS movement, Ismail Haniyeh, has been martyred in Tehran," the statement reads.
Reports indicate that one of Haniyeh's bodyguards was also killed in the attack, and the circumstances of the incident are currently being clarified.
HAMAS has confirmed the death of its Political Bureau leader in an official statement, blaming Israel for the attack. The movement stated that the assault occurred after Haniyeh attended the inauguration ceremony of Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian.
