Charles Michel Sends Letter to Armenia and Azerbaijan

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, is resuming efforts aimed at establishing sustainable peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan as tensions in the region escalate. This is stated in an article by Politico.

Two high-ranking diplomats have confirmed that earlier this month, Michel held bilateral meetings with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan during the European Political Community summit in the UK.

“In addition, Michel has also sent a letter to both parties, calling for a return to the negotiating table and ‘to finalize the peace agreement’ by making progress on unresolved issues such as border demarcation,” the publication states.

It is noted that frustration is growing in Brussels as the long-awaited agreement has yet to come to fruition, and despite meetings with Michel, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev could not find an opportunity to sit down at the negotiating table with each other.

“Ultimately, both sides need to stop playing games and conclude the agreement, as President Michel has done everything possible within the EU's powers to achieve a peace agreement,” said a senior EU diplomat close to Michel.
