‘This is an absolutely unacceptable political assassination and will lead to further escalation of tensions,’ Russian Foreign Ministry on Haniya
The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the chief political leader of the Palestinian radical group Hamas, is described as "an absolutely unacceptable political assassination" by the Russian Foreign Ministry, as reported by the RIA Novosti agency.
“This is an absolutely unacceptable political assassination, and it will lead to further escalation of tensions,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
It is reminded that Haniyeh was killed in Tehran. According to the Mehr agency, citing a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, elite units of the Iranian armed forces), Haniyeh was targeted during an assault on his residence in the Iranian capital.
“Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement, has been martyred in Tehran,” the statement said.
According to the agency, one of Haniyeh's bodyguards was also killed as a result of the attack. The circumstances of the incident are being clarified.
The Hamas movement has officially confirmed the news of the political bureau leader's death, blaming Israel for the incident. The movement declared that the attack took place after Haniyeh attended the inauguration ceremony of Iran's newly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
