The Attempt on Trump's Life was Our Greatest Failure in Decades, Says US Secret Service Chief

US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle announced on Monday that her agency failed to fulfill one of its core responsibilities: to adequately protect former President Donald Trump, who was injured during a rally in early July.

“The sacred mission of the Secret Service is to protect the leaders of our nation. We failed that mission on July 13,” said Cheatle during a hearing of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.

According to her, the attempt on Trump’s life was “the most serious failure of the Secret Service in recent decades.” She promised to take all necessary measures to ensure that such situations do not recur.

Earlier, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell had called for Cheatle’s resignation. The assassination attempt on Trump occurred during a campaign event on July 13. He was injured, and one attendee at the event lost their life. Later, the former president stated that he was feeling well. The Secret Service reported that the shooter was killed. The motives behind the assailant's actions are under investigation.
