A criminal case has been initiated regarding the incident involving gunfire at the Kotayk Police Department. This information was reported by Gor Abrahamyan, spokesperson for the Investigative Committee of Armenia.
"On July 19, 2024, at 23:36, a report was received indicating that a foreign citizen in Abovyan had requested to call 1-02 and report that the police needed to come. Responding to the alert, an officer from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia invited the foreign citizen to the Kotayk Police Department for clarification regarding the incident. While in the duty area of the Kotayk Police Department and taking advantage of the duty officer's momentary distraction, the foreign citizen allegedly took an 'AKM' type automatic firearm from under the duty desk with the intent to commit suicide and loaded it. Noticing this, two police officers attempted to take the firearm away from him, but during that time, he opened fire. He subsequently aimed the weapon at himself and fired again, resulting in injuries to himself and two police officers.
According to reports from Abovyan Medical Center, one police officer sustained an injury to his finger, the other to his palm, while the foreign citizen received a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest.
On July 20, 2024, based on this incident, a criminal case was initiated in the Abovyan investigative division of the Kotayk regional investigative authority under articles 162 (part 1), 173 (part 1), and 337 (part 1) of the Criminal Code of Armenia. An examination of the crime scene was conducted, during which fired cartridges, bullets, traces of blood, and the 'AKM' type firearm were collected from the duty area of the Kotayk Police Department. Several individuals have been interrogated, and forensic medical and ballistic examinations have been appointed. The investigation is ongoing," wrote the spokesperson of the Investigative Committee.
