Why did the members of the Civil Contract party purchase the same Chinese buses after three years of sabotage? Hakob Karapetyan
Hakob Karapetyan, the press secretary of former Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan, writes on his Facebook page: “This morning, Tigran Avinyan published a video announcing that the 171 buses ordered by the city are ready to head to Yerevan. What is noteworthy about this news? The newly purchased buses are from the Chinese company Zhongtong, literally the same buses (the ones currently in Yerevan with blue-white stripes) that the city acquired in 2021. At that time, if you remember, the top brass of the Civil Contract party organized sabotage in the Yerevan City Council; members of the Civil Contract faction did not show up for the vote. The excuse was that the government did not want these Chinese buses and planned to bring in higher-quality buses. Fast forward three years after that sabotage; the city’s mayor is now from their own party, and what do they do? They rightly purchase another 171 of the SAME Zhongtong buses, proudly announce it, and most importantly, paint them in the same colors as the German MAN buses. So, why did they buy the same Chinese buses three years after the sabotage? Officially, because they consider them the best option in terms of price/quality ratio. Okay, but then why did they sabotage the purchase process of the same buses three years ago, putting Yerevan residents at risk of a transport collapse? What do you think, why?”
