“We will try to support the return of Armenian prisoners of war” – Joe Wilson
“We want to be a mediator, helping to smooth and shape the principles that will allow for the signing of the agreement. After that, there will be other issues that need to be addressed,” replied U.S. Senator Roger Wicker during a press conference at the Armenian National Assembly, when asked whether discussions with Azerbaijan regarding the peace process include the situation of why Azerbaijan is delaying the signing of the peace agreement, and his views on the agreement without the return of prisoners and Azerbaijan's withdrawal from the occupied territories of Armenia.
He emphasized that the U.S. stance is as follows: “We highly value the sincere desire and efforts demonstrated by Armenia to reach an agreement and achieve lasting peace. Our ultimate goal is for there to be peace and security throughout the region and respect for the rights of neighbors.”
The Chair of the Helsinki Commission, Joe Wilson, also stressed that they will defend Armenia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of Armenia's borders: “We will try to support the return of Armenian prisoners of war. You have faced such situations for hundreds of years and have successfully emerged from them. I believe that, in the end, there will be stability in the South Caucasus.”
The Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Ben Cardin, noted that the peace agreement must ensure that Armenian citizens are confident that there are no attacks on their borders and that they can live in peace and tranquility. This is also a matter of relationship regulation.
