Large Number of Syringes Found in Yerevan Lake
Volunteers from the non-profit organization Green Green continue to clean Yerevan Lake. “As time goes on, it is becoming more and more difficult to remove the trash from the shore; it is wedged into the reeds where birds nest. On Saturday and Sunday, Green Green volunteers worked in the marshes wearing special work suits, surrounded by plastic, while some foul-smelling water was being poured into the lake from pipes (most likely sewage). Not everyone would dare to work under such conditions.
During two clean-up sessions (totaling 5 hours), we collected 279 bags of trash, a refrigerator, and various other useless items. There are many dead fish in the water, and there were even dead birds that feed greedily in the lake and can confuse plastic with food and get poisoned. The length of the “garbage patch” is about 200 meters. We managed to pull a lot out of there, but now we have to wait for the water level to drop or work with boats,” the organization explains.
According to Green Green’s Facebook page, the volunteers have retrieved a large number of syringes from the lake.
