Democrats Consider Biden's Early Nomination Amid Replacement Talks: Bloomberg
Democrats are considering the early nomination of current U.S. President Joe Biden to quell discussions about a potential replacement candidate. The party may officially announce Biden's candidacy as early as July 21, according to Bloomberg.
It is noted that the probable date for Biden's nomination is July 21. On that day, a virtual meeting of the Credentials Committee of the Democratic Convention will take place. Additionally, the committee is gathering to finalize procedures ahead of the party convention set to begin on August 19 in Chicago.
The Democrats had initially planned to nominate the 81-year-old Biden before the convention to ensure his presence on the Ohio ballot, where the deadline for candidate certification is August 7. Although this deadline has been postponed, plans for an early nomination could serve another purpose: to help quell ongoing discussions about potential replacements after Biden's disastrous debate with Donald Trump. The president's lackluster performance yesterday prompted calls from several prominent Democrats to halt the campaign and pass the torch to someone else.
