We Are Watching What Is Happening: Peskov

The upcoming parliamentary elections in France have caught the attention of Moscow, as highlighted by Dmitry Peskov, the Russian presidential press secretary. He stated to reporters, "Of course, France is one of the largest countries in Europe, and naturally, the outcome of the election interests us, so we are watching what is happening." This comment was made in response to questions regarding the elections.

Peskov noted the dynamic seen in the political landscape, with some political forces losing popularity while others are gaining it. However, he emphasized that this remains an internal affair for France.

On June 9, French President Emmanuel Macron decided to dissolve the National Assembly in light of the defeat of his supporters in the European Parliament elections. The opposition right-wing party, National Rally, received over 31% of the votes, while the presidential party came in second with 14.6%.

This marks the first dissolution of the lower house of parliament since President Jacques Chirac did so in 1997. The first round of voting for the snap parliamentary elections will take place on June 30, with the second round on July 7.
