Is Armenia Detaching from Its Alliance with Post-Soviet Countries? A Question for Aleksanyan

We are deepening our relations with the collective West, and this is more than apparent. This was stated by Vahe Aleksanyan, a member of the National Assembly from the ruling Civil Contract party, in an interview with NEWS.am.

“Armenia thinks several times before taking any step, signing or not signing any document, and tries to balance all state interests in every aspect. It is clear to us that we are moving in the right direction, and we are leading Armenia towards an independent and sovereign state,” he said.

In response to the question of whether Armenia is indeed detaching from its alliance with post-Soviet countries, the MP from the Civil Contract party remarked, “Regarding Belarus, everything has been made much clearer in recent days than ever. What the President of Belarus has said is just... I can't find the right word to express it. To be in an allied bloc with one country and to plan an attack on that country with its enemy, to supply it with weapons, does not fit within any moral or dignified framework.”

“Yes, Ararat Mirzoyan met with Tikhanovskaya, and that was a good move; more meetings can be held. I do not rule out inviting her to Armenia. At least she has not made statements about discussing how to plan a war with Aliyev - unlike Lukashenko, who has dreamt about Azerbaijan's victory, and that happened.”

To the remark that the authorities are indirectly claiming that Russia has taken similar steps, Aleksanyan responded, “Russia has been the number one supplier of weapons to Azerbaijan before the war. And the fact that some of our allies have behaved like enemies – our people have seen it well and evaluated it.”
