German Opposition Discusses Deportation of Ukrainian Refugees
A German politician has suggested deporting unemployed Ukrainians. Alexander Dobrindt of the opposition CSU party made this statement in an interview with Bild.
Dobrindt believes that refugees should either work in Germany or return to safe regions of Ukraine. He criticized the social support system, stating that "too many people are living off taxpayers' money." The politician has proposed strengthening the requirements for the placement of refugees in jobs, suggesting it should become part of integration services.
However, not all politicians support such statements. Representatives from the ruling coalition have sharply condemned him. Dirk Wiesen from the Social Democratic Party called the proposal "inhumane," reminding that shelling continues in Ukraine. Omid Nouripour from the Green Party also criticized the suggestion, stating that it overlooks the horrors of the war in Ukraine.
Earlier reports indicated that Germany's job placement program for Ukrainians, Jobturbo, has attracted approximately 33,000 people, which is six times less than the government was expecting. The German Minister of Labor has urged employers to hire Ukrainians even if they have only basic German language skills.
