G7 Summit to Gather 'Weakened Leaders' of the West, NYT

This year's G7 summit, taking place in Italy, will gather the 'weakened leaders' of the West to discuss an 'ungovernable world,' reports The New York Times. The 'Group of Seven' includes the largest industrialized nations, but their leaders are politically weak, with issues in Ukraine and Gaza remaining unresolved, note journalists Mark Landler and Stephen Erlanger of the publication.

The article states that leaders arriving in Italy are navigating challenging times that are shaking the West. The current summit does not promise much in the face of global issues ranging from the Ukraine conflict to ‘China's global economic competition,’ the authors point out. For example, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has three weeks left before elections, where his party risks losing power, while French President Emmanuel Macron has announced early elections in his home country after his party started losing ground to the far-right.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also facing political defeat at home, whereas U.S. President Joe Biden is compelled to fight against his rival Donald Trump in the upcoming elections. 'Even Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is facing turmoil within the Liberal Democratic Party and may lose his position this autumn,' notes the NYT.

The same applies to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is causing disappointment within Canadian society after eight years in power, the journalists report.
