UN Security Council Approves US Draft Resolution for Ceasefire in Gaza

The UN Security Council has voted in favor of a draft resolution backing US President Joe Biden's plan for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. This was reported by The Guardian.

The resolution has garnered support from 14 countries, with Russia abstaining.

The plan consists of three phases, the first of which involves a temporary ceasefire, the release of hostages by Hamas militants, and the transfer of the bodies of deceased hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners, according to BBC News.

The second phase includes the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, as well as “a permanent cessation of military operations.”

The third phase will initiate a large-scale reconstruction program for the region, supported by the US and the international community.

Speaking after the resolution, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Permanent Representative to the UN, welcomed the Security Council's decision, stating that “today we have voted for peace.”
