Biden Apologizes to Zelensky
Negotiations have begun in Paris between the Presidents of the United States and Ukraine, taking place in the context of the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Allied forces' D-Day landings during World War II. Before the meeting, U.S. President Biden apologized to Ukrainian President Zelensky on behalf of the American people for the nearly six-month delay in supplying weapons, which has allowed Russia to achieve successes on the battlefield, according to AP.
It should be noted that the release of a $61 billion aid package was blocked by the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate from last fall until this spring. During his speech at the celebrations, Biden also stated that the American people would continue to support Ukraine in the long term, saying, "We are still with you."
Furthermore, in the meeting with Zelensky, Biden announced a new military aid package for Ukraine totaling $225 million. This package includes ammunition for HIMARS rocket systems, Stinger air defense missiles, HAWK air defense missiles, howitzers, armored vehicles, patrol boats, as well as Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems, and other weaponry.
It is also noteworthy that just a few days ago, Zelensky had expressed strong criticism of his American allies for not allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territory with weapons supplied by the Ukrainian armed forces. After that, another restriction was lifted as the U.S. silently allowed targeting Russian military aircraft located in Russian airspace with air defense systems.
