The State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) has announced the arrest of two Georgian citizens as part of a terrorism investigation. They are accused of illegal acquisition and possession of firearms and ammunition.
According to the statement, the special operation was carried out simultaneously in two locations in Batumi. The SSSG provided details about traces related to the terrorist group known as ISIS.
“Automatic weapons, handguns, hand grenades, symbolic flags of the Islamic State terrorist organization, and various types of evidence significant for the investigation were seized from the residences of the arrestees,” reported the SSSG.
The Anti-Terrorism Center of the SSSG is conducting an investigation under Articles 236 (illegal acquisition, possession, and carrying of firearms) and 328 (membership in a foreign terrorist organization or support of terrorist activities) of the Criminal Code, which entail penalties of 3 to 6 years and 10 to 17 years of imprisonment, respectively.
The SSSG also noted that active anti-terrorism measures are being implemented to uncover connections between the arrested individuals and the ISIS terrorist organization.
