VIDEO: Protests in Turkey Against Arrest of Kurdish-affiliated Mayor

Supporters of the Kurdish-affiliated DEM party took to the streets today to protest the arrest of the mayor of Hakkari in southeastern Turkey. Turkish media reports this development.

On June 3, Turkish police arrested Mehmet Sidik Akisi, the Kurdish mayor of Hakkari, two months after he won the local elections, on suspicion of ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The Ministry of Interior has accused Akisi of playing a significant role in the armed group associated with the PKK.

During the protest, tensions escalated, and police employed special measures to disperse the demonstrators.
