Scholz Reveals Number of Russian Soldiers Killed Each Month in War

In the ongoing Ukrainian war, up to 24,000 Russian soldiers are killed or severely wounded each month, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He stated, "There are figures indicating that 24,000 Russian soldiers are killed or heavily wounded monthly," during the "Civil Dialogue" event. This statement was reported by dw.com.

Scholz emphasized that this, along with the deaths of civilians, is a consequence of Putin's "imperial obsession." The President of the Russian Federation regards Ukraine and Belarus as part of Russia, thus violating the principle of territorial integrity that has been upheld in Europe for decades, the German Chancellor noted.

There are no reliable data on the Russian military's casualties during the war. Journalists from Mediazona and the BBC's Russian service have identified more than 50,000 names of deceased Russian soldiers through open sources in collaboration with volunteers, with the aim to gather information by April 2024. In the same month, the UK Ministry of Defence estimated Russia's potential losses in the war to be around 450,000 personnel. In January, William Burns, the head of the CIA, spoke about 315,000 Russian soldiers being killed.

No official data is available on the losses sustained by the Ukrainian armed forces during this period either. In February 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced for the first time that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed.
