Iran Announces Date for Presidential Snap Elections

Snap presidential elections in Iran are set to take place on June 28. According to TASS, citing the Iranian Mehr news agency, this announcement was made by Mohsen Eslami, spokesman for the election headquarters in Iran, who added that June 28 can be considered the date for the 14th presidential elections.

He stated that the Guardian Council has been proposed to begin the registration of candidates from May 28. According to the source, the Guardian Council in Iran is responsible for confirming candidates for the elections, in addition to analyzing the constitutional compliance of laws passed by the parliament. It also approves candidates for key state positions, including the presidency.

The snap presidential elections in Iran are being held following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, which occurred due to a helicopter crash on May 19 in the East Azerbaijan province. The crash also resulted in the deaths of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the governor of East Azerbaijan, the Friday prayer leader of Tabriz, the head of the president's security detail, and the helicopter crew.

According to Article 131 of the country's constitution, First Vice President Mohammad Mohber has temporarily assumed the responsibilities of the presidency and will organize new elections within a maximum of 50 days together with the heads of the judicial and legislative authorities.
