Another Opportunity Missed, Unfortunately: Zakharova
The arms race in outer space has missed yet another opportunity to be curtailed due to Washington's actions. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry. TASS reports.
“The results of the vote on the draft resolution presented by Russia in collaboration with China during the discussions at the UN Security Council are disappointing. The United States and its allies, despite all our efforts to consider their proposals (including the development of a corresponding American-Japanese draft resolution), have opposed our constructive initiative, which aimed at preventing an arms race in outer space. Unfortunately, yet another opportunity has been missed because of the U.S. and its allies,” she noted.
According to Zakharova, the U.S. has once again demonstrated “the real priorities in the space sector, which are aimed not at keeping space free from weapons of any kind, but at positioning weapons in outer space and turning it into a theater of military confrontation.”
The diplomat also emphasized that Russia, as the author of several fundamental initiatives aimed at preventing an arms race in outer space, will continue to contribute to the maintenance of a weapons-free space and to ensure that another area does not turn into a zone of tension and armed confrontation. “From now on, we will consistently advocate for the exploration of outer space to be conducted exclusively for peaceful purposes, for the benefit of all mankind and on an equal basis,” added the Foreign Ministry's official representative.
