EU Approves Security Guarantees Draft for Ukraine

The European Union has approved a draft to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, which is currently being discussed with Kyiv in Brussels. This was reported by Welt am Sonntag, citing a document it obtained.

According to the information, the ambassadors of the 27 EU countries recently agreed on an 11-page text that is marked as "confidential." Brussels intends to provide guarantees no later than early July. These guarantees will be in effect until Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO.

"The European Union and its member states are making a decisive contribution to ensuring Ukraine's immediate and long-term security and stability through military and civilian assistance, humanitarian, financial, trade, and economic support, the resettlement of displaced persons, support for reforms, reconstruction, and recovery, as well as through sanctions instruments and diplomatic support," the newspaper quotes the document's excerpt.

It is noted that "in the event of aggression, the EU and Ukraine intend to hold consultations within 24 hours regarding Ukraine's needs." The newspaper emphasizes that Brussels has thus ruled out the involvement of European forces in the conflict in Ukraine, but has promised to continue supplying weapons and training military personnel, assist in reforming the country's security sector and demining, and also cooperate to counter hybrid threats and cyberattacks.
