Russian Government to Resign Today
The Russian government, led by Mikhail Mishustin, will resign on May 7. It will subsequently be elected under new rules established following constitutional amendments made in 2020.
The current government will step down immediately after the inauguration of the elected President Vladimir Putin, when the leader assumes office.
This time, the government will be completely elected for the first time under the new rules that came into effect after amendments were made to the Constitution.
According to the new norms, the majority of candidates for prime ministers, deputy prime ministers, and ministers will be approved by the State Duma. This will not apply to the “power block,” which includes the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Justice; their leaders will be appointed by the President only after consulting with the Federation Council.
The current government was established in January 2020, following the resignation of the previous government led by Dmitry Medvedev.
