I Have Always Loved Football for the Game, Not for Money; That Door is Closed for Me - Henrikh Mkhitaryan

The former captain of the Armenian national team, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was recently crowned champion of Italy with Inter Milan, gave an exclusive interview to the First Channel's 3:1 program, during which he addressed a number of issues, including the transfer of renowned footballers to the Saudi Arabian league and whether he has ever considered accepting an offer from a Saudi club.

“By inviting strong footballers, they are trying to develop their football and strengthen the league. But I view it negatively, as money is not what matters in football. What matters is the love for the game. Since the first time I touched the ball, that love has always been with me. I have always loved football for the game and not for money. That door is closed for me. I do not consider that option and I do not wish to, as the level of European football, the passion of the fans, and their attitude are completely different,” said the former captain of the Armenian national team.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan reflected on being crowned the champion of Italy. “I waited a long time for the Scudetto, the championship of Italy; it is very valuable and much awaited. I am very happy, as not everyone manages to achieve this at the age of 35. I will not rest on this achievement. At this age, it is a bit difficult for a footballer to play; I try to relax correctly, train well, and do my best. Since childhood, my first goal was to play for Arsenal. I accomplished my goal by becoming a professional. I still have a two-year contract with Inter, which is valid until 2026. I will see how long I can play until then, and then we will think about whether to continue with Inter or elsewhere.

Unfortunately, I do not follow the Armenian league much, but I watch whenever possible. I always support Pyunik, as that’s where my career began; I know they are going through difficult times now. Whether my son will become a footballer or not, he will decide for himself; I do not force him to play football. He wanted to touch the ball the first time he did. I can show him direction in life, but he must make the decision,” noted Mkhitaryan.
