Georgia Officials Indicate Conditions for Revising Foreign Agents Law

Georgia’s authorities are prepared to reconsider the foreign agents law if the EU decides to accept the country into its ranks, stated the leader of the ruling party, Irakli Garibashvili.

“If we are told that tomorrow we become a member of the European Union, then it would be very easy to cancel, revise it, transform it, or adopt a new one,” Garibashvili told reporters.

Recently, EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell’s spokesperson, Peter Stano, said that the bill on “transparency of external influence,” currently under consideration by the Georgian parliament, does not align with the principles of the European Union and could have consequences for the country’s path toward membership.

Mass protests have erupted in Tbilisi against the foreign agents law, with participants attempting to break through police barriers.
