What the New EU Sanctions Against Iran Are Related To
The leaders of EU member states and governments have called for maximum restraint from all parties in the Middle East during an informal summit held in Brussels. They also pledged to impose new sanctions on Iran, which are "related to drones and missiles." This is stated in the summary communiqué of the meeting regarding the Middle East, reported by TASS.
"The European Council calls on Iran and its agents to cease all attacks and urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action that could escalate tensions in the region," the statement reads.
The document emphasizes that the European Union strongly condemns Iran's attacks on Israel and expresses full solidarity with the people of Israel, reaffirming its commitment to the security of the country and regional stability. Furthermore, the EU intends to impose new sanctions against Iran, which will be "related to unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles."
"The European Union will impose further restrictive measures against Iran, particularly in relation to unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles," the statement noted.
As explained to reporters by the President of the European Council Charles Michel, the new restrictive measures will pertain to Iranian companies involved in the production of drones and missiles. He did not specify exactly when the sanctions would be imposed.
In early April, Israel struck the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus. In response, Iran launched missiles and drones towards the Jewish state on April 13, warning regional countries. Tehran emphasized that its attacks were solely targeted at military facilities.
The UK, Jordan, and the USA assisted Israel in intercepting Iranian missiles and drones. The Israeli Defense Forces stated that 99 percent of approximately 300 Iranian projectiles heading towards the Jewish state were intercepted. Tehran assured that it has no plans for further actions after the April 13 strike, but authorities in the Jewish state stated that they are preparing a response.
