National Assembly Rejects Opposition's Bill on Border Demarcation and Delimitation

The National Assembly of Armenia did not accept an urgent discussion proposed by the opposition regarding the contentious issues of "Border Demarcation and Delimitation between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan." The proposed statement on this topic was put forward with the understanding that it would spark public interest.

Haik Konjoryan, the leader of the ruling Civil Contract faction, stated that the bill was handed to their faction only 1-2 hours before the closed session, and they did not participate in the drafting of the statement. He noted, “Furthermore, there are several provisions in the text of the statement that are unrelated to the process of border demarcation and delimitation.”

He added that the Civil Contract faction would not participate in the voting. The secretary of the Armenia faction, Artzvik Minasyan, stated that there were fundamental records and formulations in the proposed bill. “Considering that the majority will not vote, we inform that today it will also be put into official circulation, giving the majority an opportunity to work more actively on this proposal,” he said.

It is important to note that the statement was put to a vote, receiving 31 votes in favor and 1 against. Recall that the urgent closed session regarding the border demarcation and delimitation issue between Armenia and Azerbaijan took place on April 9. The decision to hold the session in closed format was made through voting, where 57 deputies voted in favor, 28 against, and 0 abstained. The opposition opposed conducting the session in a closed format. The Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia Mher Grigoryan and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan were present at the session.
