The US Will Hold China Accountable for Russia's Successes in Ukraine, Says Deutsche Welle

The United States will hold China accountable for Russia's successes in Ukraine, reports Deutsche Welle.

US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell stated that Russia's territorial annexations could alter the balance of power in Europe. "We have directly told China that if this continues, it will affect US-China relations. We will not stand idly by and say everything is fine," emphasized the senior official.

"We will view this not only as a unique Russian action but as a series of actions supported by China, as well as North Korea. This is contrary to our interests," Campbell highlighted.

According to him, maintaining peace and stability in Europe is historically the most important mission for the US. Campbell noted that President Joe Biden's administration had previously warned Chinese officials that intelligence indicated Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered the conflict to begin in Ukraine in February 2022. He mentioned that Beijing was concerned about Russia's military failures and was working to restore a "full range of capabilities" for Moscow. "They did not want a regime change," said Campbell.

However, more than two years later, "Russia has almost fully rearmed and now poses a significant threat to Ukraine and the surrounding region," the official noted, reminding that the United States has repeatedly threatened Beijing with sanctions if China were to take more significant actions in support of Russia.
