Turkish Authorities Retreat: A Pro-Kurdish Party Candidate to Become Mayor of Van
The Turkish Supreme Election Council has decided that Abdullah Zeydan, the candidate from the left-wing pro-Kurdish HDP party, will assume the duties of the Mayor of Van. Celebrations have begun in the streets of Van following the council's decision, according to Turkish media.
It is worth mentioning that mass protests in Van have been ongoing for two days, related to the victories of pro-Kurdish 'HDP' party candidates in several eastern regions during the elections, as well as the situation surrounding the mayoral position in Van. Despite a ban, people have continued to take to the streets. Protesters have thrown stones at the police, who have responded with water cannons and tear gas.
