How Many Individuals Have Applied for Asylum in Armenia and Mainly from Which Countries?
How many individuals have applied for asylum from 2022 to 2024, and mainly from which countries? Are individuals from India applying for asylum or not? This question was directed by Gegham Nazaryan, a member of the 'Armenia' parliamentary faction, to Armen Ghazaryan, the head of the Migration and Citizenship Service, at the session of the parliamentary committee on legal affairs.
“I currently have statistics for 13 years. In 2020, the number of asylum applications was 206, in 2021 it was 260, and in 2022 we saw a sharp increase to 968, primarily due to the ongoing military actions in Ukraine. In 2023, the numbers reduced slightly compared to 2022, totaling 817. Traditionally, we have seen countries from the Middle East like Syria, Iraq, and Egypt at the top of the list. However, the trend shifted in 2022-2023 due to the war in Ukraine, with Ukraine now leading the list, followed by Syria and Iraq in second and third places. We have no asylum applications from Indian citizens. During my practice, there have been only 1-2 cases,” noted Armen Ghazaryan.
