Zakharova Comments on Zelensky's Statements

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken about negotiations with Russia as he becomes increasingly anxious about the expiration of his term. This was stated by the official representative of the Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“He is getting nervous. The elections are just around the corner. Or maybe they are not,” said the diplomat.

Presidential elections in Ukraine were supposed to take place on March 31, 2024; however, campaigning has not been conducted due to martial law and general mobilization. Zelensky has insisted that elections are currently “untimely” and has called for a definitive end to this debate.

On Friday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the question of recognizing Volodymyr Zelensky as the President of Ukraine could lose its relevance by May 21.

In an interview with CBS News, Zelensky contemplated for the first time the possibility that negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv could begin without Ukraine returning to its 1991 borders. He believes that Vladimir Putin would be willing to engage in dialogue if he “loses the territories” that have been incorporated into Russia since the onset of the special military operation.
