Turkey Plans Military Operations Against Kurdish Rebels in Iraq

Turkey has announced plans to initiate large-scale military operations against Kurdish rebels operating in Iraq. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed to "end" the threat posed by the Kurdish insurgent group. This was reported by Voice of America.

For years, the Turkish armed forces have conducted incursions into neighboring Northern Iraq, targeting the bases of the "Kurdistan Workers' Party," a Kurdish insurgent group. This group has been fighting for decades for the protection of Kurdish rights in Turkey.

President Erdoğan has promised to "eliminate" the threats stemming from the "Kurdistan Workers' Party." Turkish presidential advisor Mesut Kasın stated, "Turkey is expected to establish a new 40-kilometer security zone in the border regions of Iraq, similar to the one that exists in Syria."

Simultaneously, Erdoğan has developed close ties with the leadership of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government. Observers note that such cooperation holds significant importance from Ankara's perspective in neutralizing the threat posed by the "Kurdistan Workers' Party."

Analyst Murat Aslan states: "Turkey will attempt to cooperate with Iraqi security forces. Turkey aims to encircle and then eliminate all members of the "Kurdistan Workers' Party" operating in Iraq."

This April, Erdoğan is scheduled to visit Iraqi Kurdistan and Baghdad. Observers suggest that expanded bilateral trade, as well as increases in international trade passing through Iraq and Turkey, are providing Erdoğan with new leverage.
