Damages from Bridge Collapse in Baltimore Estimated at $100-200 Million, Says U.S. Transportation Secretary
Due to the collapse of a bridge in Baltimore, losses from the cessation of port operations are estimated to be between $100 million and $200 million daily. This was stated by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg during a press briefing at the White House.
“My latest assessment is that we are nearing losses of about $100 to $200 million every day,” he said.
At the same time, Buttigieg pointed out that a primary concern is the wages of workers who are not working due to the halted port operations. This amounts to around $2 million per day. “If the goods are not moving, then nobody is working; right now, efforts are being made to unload some of the stuck vehicles and load them onto ground transport,” he explained. “So, likely, they are working now, but this work will not last long,” the Secretary clarified.
