Positive Dynamics Observed: Zakharova on Negotiation Process Between Yerevan and Baku

Positive dynamics were observed in the negotiation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan when high-level tripartite agreements were actively being implemented, and regular communications were taking place in the Russia-Azerbaijan-Armenia format. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, during a weekly press briefing.

According to her, this does not mean that there are no other theoretical possibilities. However, at that time, there was dynamics related to the implementation of tripartite agreements and the formats of their execution.

Zakharova noted that later, Western countries began to intervene in the situation in the region, which primarily aimed to dominate the agenda, and nothing more. The Russian official believes they were disturbed by the fact that the situation was entering a peaceful phase, with a legal international framework where countries could agree without aggression or malice, despite having a very heavy past, and with a clear plan for a peaceful future.

“This was an interception of the agenda. It was the Westerners who were imposing their version on Armenia regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh question, forgetting about the necessity of protecting the rights and security of the local Armenian population. This led to the creation of additional problems in the region,” said Zakharova.

She pointed out that Western regimes are compelling Armenia to make unilateral decisions on disputed territorial issues along the border with Azerbaijan. She emphasized that Armenia is also being directed to ruin the positive trends in its relations with Baku and Moscow.

“Our relations with Yerevan have been and remain, and I sincerely believe that they will develop in the future,” Zakharova stated.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry highlighted that the EU mission is spying on Russia, Iran, and Azerbaijan from the territory of Armenia, which has factual substantiation. She did not rule out that this could lead to irreversible consequences in the region.
