‘Armenia has been attacked by certain external undemocratic forces,’ says Pashinyan
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan delivered a speech at the third summit for Democracy held online. This year, the event is chaired by the Republic of Korea.
Pashinyan stated, “Honorable leaders of nations,
Ladies and gentlemen,
It is an honor for me to speak at the Summit for Democracy and share the democratic achievements and aspirations of the Republic of Armenia. The agenda of democratic reforms remains a priority for our government. As a result, according to reports from Freedom House, Armenia has been ranked among countries with 'Free Internet' for several consecutive years. We have improved our position in the Global Freedom Index, raising it by two points over the past year. Armenia has also made progress in the World Press Freedom Index, improving its standing by two points in 2023.
“Ladies and gentlemen,
A fundamental question that arises in democratic countries today is whether democracy can provide security and stability. Over the past few years, we have repeatedly felt how democratic institutions can ensure internal stability. On the other hand, Armenia has been attacked by certain external undemocratic forces through military and hybrid means, aimed not only against our country's territorial integrity and independence but also against democracy itself. Therefore, we decided to join the International Criminal Court to protect our independence, territorial integrity, and democracy.
“Remaining committed to the peace process with Azerbaijan, Armenia prioritizes its security through peaceful coexistence and cooperation with its neighbors and beyond. Thus, the ‘Peace Crossroads’ initiative proposed by the Government of the Republic of Armenia aims to contribute to security, stability, and peace in the South Caucasus. This initiative is another indication of my government’s commitment to fostering sustainable peace and security in the region through cooperation.
“Ladies and gentlemen,
I reaffirm Armenia’s commitment to the path of democracy for the benefit of the entire region and for the benefit of the statehood of the Republic of Armenia, its sovereignty, and its international role.
Thank you.”
