Delhi Recognized as the City with the Most Polluted Air in the World
The National Capital Region of Delhi, which includes New Delhi, has been recognized as the capital city with the most polluted air in the world, while the city with the highest pollution levels is Begusarai in India. This information comes from the 2023 World Air Quality Report prepared by the Swiss organization IQAir, as reported by TASS.
"In Delhi, the PM2.5 level increased from 89.1 micrograms per cubic meter in 2022 to 92.7 µg/m³ in 2023," the report states. Consequently, the concentration of PM2.5 (fine particulate matter that can deeply penetrate the respiratory system and cause health issues) in the city's air significantly exceeds the safe limit of 60 µg/m³. The research highlights that since 2018, the Indian capital has been ranked among the top cities for the most polluted air in the world four times.
At the same time, Begusarai in the state of Bihar has been recognized as the most polluted agglomeration (city and suburbs) in the world.
