VIDEO: 26 Killed and 4,360 Injured in Fireworks Incident in Iran

During the Chaharshanbe Suri fire festival in Iran, 26 people were killed and 4,360 were injured due to a fireworks incident, reports the Iranian Mehr news agency.

According to the head of Iran's emergency services, around 1,400 ambulances were put on high alert during the celebrations. In Tehran alone, 1,800 calls were received in one day regarding fire hazards, resulting in the deaths of two residents in the capital.

Most injuries were caused by improper use of fireworks and by jumping over bonfires. Every year, on the last Wednesday before the Iranian New Year (Nowruz) on March 21, one of the oldest festivals in the Islamic Republic, Chaharshanbe Suri, or 'Red Wednesday', is celebrated. Millions of Iranians take to the streets of cities and villages to light bonfires and jump over them throughout the night.
