Vanadzor Man Frequently Subjected His 63-Year-Old Mother to Physical and Psychological Abuse

The investigation into the case of a resident of Vanadzor who regularly subjected his 63-year-old mother to physical and psychological violence has been completed by the Lori regional investigative department of the RA Investigative Committee.

On March 8, 2023, a resident of Vanadzor reported to the police that various side mirrors of cars had been stolen by her son. Days later, the same woman testified that her son had attacked her and inflicted physical harm because of her report about the theft.

Based on the received reports, a single criminal case was initiated, but a decision was later made to separate the part related to the violence and investigate it separately. The investigation revealed that the 42-year-old man had committed physical and psychological violence against his mother in their apartment on different days, sometimes under the influence of alcohol.

Specifically, it was found that on March 11, 2023, upon learning about his mother’s report regarding the theft of car mirrors, he first argued with her and then struck her in the face, causing physical pain. The same actions, simultaneously making death threats against his mother, were repeated by the 42-year-old man without any reason on January 24, 2024, after which, feeling a real threat from the threats made, the 63-year-old woman turned to the police.

On the same day, the man was subjected to an urgent measure prohibiting him from approaching his mother within 100 meters and from contacting her through any means, including written and telephone communications, for a period of 20 days, until February 12, 2024. However, intentionally ignoring this prohibition, on January 25, 2024, he went to his mother's residence again. During this visit, angry over her reporting him to the police for perpetrating violence against her, and under the influence of alcohol, he threatened to kill her and then struck her several times in the head, face, and other parts of her body, causing physical pain.

The young man has been charged under points 4 of part 2 of Article 194, and points 6 of part 2 of Article 195, and part 1 of Article 508 of the RA Criminal Code (for failure to comply with the requirements stipulated in points 1-4 of part 3 of Article 7 and points 1-4 of part 5 of Article 8 of the law on prevention of domestic violence, protection of persons subjected to domestic violence, and restoration of family harmony). A detention measure has been chosen against him. The investigation concerning the physical and psychological influence against his mother has been completed, and the criminal case materials have been sent to the court with an accusatory conclusion. The investigation regarding the theft of mirrors from cars is ongoing.
