Stoltenberg on Plans to Expand NATO Countries with Nuclear Weapons

NATO does not plan to expand the number of its members with nuclear weapons at the expense of Sweden. This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Sweden.

"We have no plans to increase the number of NATO countries with nuclear weapons. We also continuously assess our forces' capabilities, and currently, we have no plans regarding new combat groups in Sweden," Stoltenberg said.

According to him, if the need arises one day, Sweden itself will have to make a decision. "Sweden is an independent country that makes its own decisions. Membership in NATO will not change Sweden's right and ability to say 'no' to the deployment of nuclear weapons," the NATO chief noted.

It should be reminded that Sweden officially became NATO's 32nd member on March 7. The ceremony for raising the Swedish flag took place today at NATO headquarters.
