Many EU Countries Ready to Impose Sanctions on Azerbaijan in Case of Dangerous Developments, Yeghoyan
The entire European political community is gathered within the EU, and whatever the European Parliament says inevitably enters the agenda and vocabulary of European political circles. These are themes they start to contemplate, issues they address.
This was stated today, February 29, during a briefing with journalists at the National Assembly by Arman Yeghoyan, the Chairman of the Permanent Commission on European Integration, when asked about the two Armenia-friendly resolutions adopted by the European Parliament yesterday and what they mean for Armenia.
Yeghoyan initially reminded that the members of the European Parliament are directly elected by EU citizens. They are experienced politicians in their respective countries, having served as prime ministers or ministers, and hold significant influence over politics in their nations.
“Especially in the last three years, the resolutions of the European Parliament have been increasingly targeted in discussing the unacceptability of the policies pursued by Azerbaijan. For instance, two years ago, no one was talking about sanctions; based on my conversations, I can say that such a notion was absent among anyone. Now, however, there are discussions about sanctions, not only individual sanctions but also sanctions related to the purchase of oil and gas, which is a very serious signal.
I know this is not only the position of the European Parliament. Many member states are prepared to apply this toolkit at the national level in the event of the mentioned dangerous developments. Of course, there must be consensus among the 27 countries at the EU level,” he said.
