Poland May Temporarily Close Border with Ukraine

Poland is negotiating the temporary closure of its borders with Ukraine and the cessation of mutual trade. This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as quoted by the PAP agency.

Tusk emphasized that this decision would be temporary and "painful" for both parties. "When it comes to the border with Ukraine, I am prepared to make tough decisions, always coordinating with Kyiv to avoid excessive tension. But we must find a long-term solution," Tusk said.

According to him, the topic of border closures is set to be discussed during a meeting with protesting Polish farmers on February 29. Polish authorities also plan to discuss subsidies and other measures that would make Polish grain prices more attractive than Ukrainian grain.

Tusk referred to Poland as the "most pro-Ukrainian state," but noted that the decision regarding free trade with Ukraine is too costly for Warsaw. "We are unable to pay such a price, so we are looking for a solution that will protect the Polish market as well as the European market from the influx of evidently cheaper agricultural products from Ukraine," the Prime Minister stated.
