American spacecraft lands on the Moon: NASA
The American private spacecraft Odysseus has successfully landed near the Moon's south pole. This was reported by the developing company and NASA.
"We can confirm that our vehicle is on the Moon, and we are receiving signals; Odysseus has found a new home," said the flight director of Odysseus during the broadcast.
The spacecraft, launched from Earth on February 15, made its lunar landing autonomously. Everything went smoothly up until the landing time, at which point the flight control center lost contact with the device. It took about ten minutes to restore the signal and confirm the landing.
As NASA confirmed the successful landing, Odysseus touched down on the lunar surface at 18:23. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson has already called the Odysseus mission "victorious" and congratulated the developer Intuitive Machines, the launch operator SpaceX, and everyone involved in organizing the return of the Moon's surface to the USA. The last time an American craft landed there was in December 1972.
The flight of Odysseus is considered a significant event for the USA as part of the Artemis program, which aims to land an international crew on the Moon in the coming years and construct a near-Moon station.
