UK Imposes Sanctions on Prison Administration Where Navalny Died

The UK authorities have imposed sanctions on the prison administration in the Harp Ava region of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, home to IK-3, where political figure Alexei Navalny died. This information was published on the British government’s website, as reported by Meduza.

A total of six individuals, including the facility's chief, Vadim Kalinin, have come under the sanctions. The measures were established under a global sanctions regime aimed at addressing human rights violations. The restrictions include asset freezes and travel bans.

In a government press release, it was noted that the UK has become the first country to impose sanctions in response to Navalny's death. “It is clear that the Russian authorities have seen a threat in Navalny and have repeatedly tried to silence him. In 2020, FSB operatives poisoned him with 'Novichok', imprisoned him for peaceful political activity, and sent him to a Arctic prison. No one should doubt the repressive nature of the Russian system. This is why today we are sanctioning senior prison officials responsible for holding him in the penal colony where he spent his final months,” stated UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron.
