The Danger of Escalation Remains Real: Emmanuel Macron at Meeting with Pashinyan

Recent incidents in Syunik indicate that the danger of escalation remains real. This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron during a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Paris.

He also expressed sorrow for the fact that an Azerbaijani serviceman was injured during the armed incident in February, as well as for the losses and injuries on the Armenian side. "France is saddened that an Azerbaijani was injured from the gunfire on February 12, which has been acknowledged by the Armenian leadership with full transparency. But France also expresses regret for the disproportionate response from Azerbaijan, which resulted in 4 deaths and one injury on the Armenian side," said Macron.

He added that France will continue to support efforts directed towards a just and sustainable peace. "We are convinced that this can only be achieved with respect for international law, self-determination, and the inviolability of borders and territorial integrity. During your meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Prague in 2022, you reaffirmed your commitment to the Almaty Declaration. It is essential that Azerbaijan clarifies its ambiguity regarding Armenia's territorial integrity and maps so that diligent work can be done in the delimitation and demarcation process, which will serve as a basis for the mutual withdrawal of forces at the border," Macron stated.

Emmanuel Macron also noted, "You can count on France's support for Armenia regarding its independence, territorial integrity, democratic processes, and aspirations for peace."
